The Early Years of the Old Masters: Baselitz, Richter, Polke, and Kiefer 12.04.2019 - 11.08.2019

With its rich collection of masterworks dating from the fourteenth century to the present, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart is among Germany’s most popular museums. Both its impressive museum complex and the works it contains mirror the link between tradition and modernity. The Neue Staatsgalerie, designed by James Stirling, is regarded as a masterpiece of postmodern architecture in Germany.

Baselitz, Richter, Polke and Kiefer, The Early Years of the Old Masters. Four names from Germany that have attained world fame. The exhibition focuses on the 1960s and features some 100 works. It shows how in the early years of their careers these artists responded to an era characterised by challenges and upheavals, utopias and reorientations, power and protest.
